Pressrelease

RainerGanahl is a New York based artist who for more than a decade has pursued acritical agenda with conceptual means. His main interest lies in educational, academicand linguistic politics and ideologies. He is also interested in criticallyobserving how powerful economical relations are affecting the production ofknowledge, historiography - the writing of history - and subjectivity.

Themain focus of Rainer Ganahl's exhibitions is Karl Marx as an intellectual,ideological and political perforated receptacle that - over the past twentiethcentury - has been filled with intelligence and stupidity; hope and despair;social and economic self-awareness and ordered famine and misery; liberationand terror with total control. This list of contradictions could be endlesslycontinued.

Froma variety of angles Rainer Ganahl presents a multiplicity of materials andviews on Karl Marx: photographs and video tapes of a Karl Marx Reading Seminarthe artist has been conducting for 3 years in New York, London, Toulouse, Oslo,Frankfurt and Kiel;  S/L(seminars/lectures) photographs of Terry Eagleton  and Ernesto Laclau both lecturing on Karl Marx; avideo-interview and photographs of a travel agent who survived three years of aNazi concentration camp, lived under Stalinism, emigrated to Israel in 1977,moved to New York in 1981 and still defends Stalin and his regime of terroragainst all historical odds, denying and doubting commonly agreedhistoriography though he himself was victimized by the very system he stilldreams after; a wall painting showing the interface of an online book sellerwith the entry Karl Marx; an internet web site with an address in form of aneon object - www.ganahlmarx.com - ; and a couple of pencil drawings entitledE-mail errors, reflecting with self-irony on the concept of this show.

Thisis Rainer Ganahl's fourth one person shows in New York. In 1999 he alsorepresented Austria in theVenice Biennial. Current and soon forthcoming oneperson shows are, among others, at Nächst St. Stephan, Vienna; MassimoDecarlo, Milan and Sint-Lukas Stiching, Brussels;
