I M P E A CH M E N T. HEARINGS
A FASHION SHOW / SHIRTS & OVERALLS 2019 / 2020 / 2021

many thanks to all the participants. ... photographers and models ... the ABK stuttgart *accademy of fine arts stuttgart and its talents thanks to all the varioius tailors involved.design and overall fashion design rainer ganahl, web site and photoshopping rainer ganahl, most camera work rainer ganahl in order not to expose individual participants to unwanted or distracactive atttention I keep their identity private. As a tenured professor of fine arts, i many incredible priveledges and given the hight profile of my work with fashion ...and in accordance to their taks as students of fine arts / i have come to the conclusion to not hightllight specific models and refrain even from names. this decision has also it origin in discussions and is conform with the protection of the @consent only@ policies that dicate my work. i consider fashion the way i develop it a form of art and do not sell individual pieces except under certain circumstances not to be outlined here. I see fashion and beauty as a discursive form of critique of a capitalist system that generates and liberates friedoms and its limits and dilemas. in a more Frankfurt School phrasing, i couid see the dialectic of aporias and operas for the benefit of being young, beautiful, old and even more beautfiul and whatever....moda, fashion , mode or fashion design is a form of a shit show... that is worth to be exploited and pushed. its a trip that is is fun and elevates fromhte limiting depressions of our machinist age of photoshop and camera dictates.

here you can see my son Edgar DAS KAPTIAL l but photograhped when he was 5 years old. MARXISM is expensive when it is Manhtattan Marxism,, the book i creted with all thle stuff that entered.
more and more i feel and act like an artist who is totally outside the gallery system that always dumbs me sooner or later due to the capitalist logic of money and mehrwert.

i love mess and i love when people pose. the act of posing I find liberating as it is a form of protest as welll of sellf-defense. People when they pose defend an image albeit of whether it is worth defending or not. but the joy of posing consists in hte flip floppy aspecdt of poses that are worn out and again attracitve, klischees and agains puns of klischees. But what it really does, obviously posing or not, it demonatates a charachter that communitcates the beauty and fragility of people, wanted or unwanted. Students are for me the most interesting and enviable demographics since they invite me to endless learning and inspiration. I tach, as if I am a studient of mine and of my students. I feel i learn as much from my students as the other way around.

antonia me and felix - the rest of the class was too buzy and found a three day anouncemnt as too short noticed - hence we all fit a car and needed only two hotel rooms. Lindau is the German Austria border town and the mountains on hte other side of the lake are part of the Swiss alpins. the traces in hte sky shows remnants of the 10 000 ft hight air space that is cruxial and hightly frequented for that part of the world that somehow is a suburban center that constitutes a big triangle ranging from the ost schweiz to vorarlberg to munich and up to Stuttgart not even counting all the larger rings that bring us to zurich, Basel and beyond. The lake constance provides fresh water for Stuttgart nearly 190 km away. the flattness of the lake and its relative openness are stunning in this already mountain framed area where hills quickly end in rock formations starting already in Bregenz, hte first and biggest town of Vorarlberg when coming from Germanuy. Due to my job in Stuttgart borders are of little difference yet provide interesting funcdtions and they allow a constant here there game i continue with my Euoprean and USA stuatus. It is a fact that there is no place but NYC where i have spent most of my life.

Fußach is a site known for it's special access to the lake Constanc but also the the river Rhine, as well as the Swiss Austrian border. The border rive Rhein, called the Old Rhine, is here not more thant a couple of meters wide and within walking distance from adjacent frontier location village of Altach. But the the main water vallume of the river has been streamlined into a differnet river bed that defines Fussach as a protected idyllic pastoral location offereing one of it s most beuattufuil and peacefull corners of the lake consdtance just behind where the stream of the water enters and feeds the lake that is shared between Germany, Switzerland, and Austria In our family of 6, Fussach was a weekend and vacation site my fathere was keen of organizing as a get a way from the much more mountainais colder Bludenz, surrounded by steep mountains I loved and hated at the same time. But he also didn't wanna be reminded of work and enjoyed to be off any phone line, to be basically out of reach and simple reducded to an idle resistance surrounded by relative flattness, water and nature. The fact that I love big metropolitain centers with New York City the most has more or less something to do that buidllings, cosmopolitain complexity and linguistic diversity are here the hightest in the world according to statisitcs. When I visited Fussach last time, I was realizing from the parked vancy cars and the licence plates that Fussach is a little Zuers and Lech and St Anton -*my mothers birtth site - one of the most internationals spots in Vorarlberg, the most western federal state of Austria with Vienna the most removed. Voarrlberg is excactly in the middle between a trip from Vinenna to Paris. hence we are closer to France than to Vienna or even Salzburg. Italy is also adjacent sharing the Alps.

Bludesch is home of my other sister who was not at home on even two attemps to visits. the mountains seen in the periphery are all loaded with domestic memory and nearly all elevations had been visited on one of my endless hiking tours, a habit that was stared already as kids with our parents and instigated for sure the adventurous mind I still enjoy having and the sportive attitidue I have something that is currently challenged with the virus since we are supposed to be quaranteened and the gyms are closed. I like these images because of how the fabrics created in themself a landscape and complement the automotive speed that technololgy allowed and camreas cna capture with stunning ease.

Bludenz - the small Austriain town i was born: one hospital, one birth site, one legistlation. a regional hub that is interfacing industrial work and tourism, nature, beauty, labor and ugliness but also a plattform for school and learning. The over 800 year old town has barely over a dozen thousads inhabitants and is too small for hight learning. Hence no university but advanced hight schools and voacational schools. As a teenager i was transfered to Feldkirch due to then absence of na advanced business centric high school that also opened a passway to university due to an extra year. I was admitted at age 14 to the so called Handelsakademie Feldkirch where I spent 5 years with lots of school students i already encountered in Hauptschule Bludenz, the mediocre school format that covered middle school, age 10 - 14 years. Already at middlle school i got in troubles for not allways following the rules, and my fights with my parents over haird style and clothing were real. I was an avid independent bicyclist and was never seen on a bus or walking. Cycling was part of my life and entered from the moment I could walk. Hence it is not a surpirse that even today I stay a bicyclist trying to resist all these attractive electric rollers. Bludenz is a spot where 5 valleys meet the last significant spot before the trains and cars travel on to Tyrole. It is also a traditionally conservatie site wiht a working class culture but one that doesn t really have develloped a classical proletarian culture. Foreign labor from Italy, Yugoslavia and Turkey was filling many factory floors. I had one so called oncle who spent his life on various facotry floors and was terrified when i started to use marxist ideas to describe the topograhy of the area with housing comlexes surrounding factories that resembled castles when they were built in the 19th century. I become acquainted with historical materialism at the University of near by Innsbruck where i studied 5 years and completed a master in philosophy, history and one that combined phycology and paedagogy. Hence, I saw in my relative a classical consufsion berween a troubled class conscioiusness and his dialy existence as a factory worker that made him consequently even sick. I myself was born to a family of the local middle class that didn t work with hands but with words. My father, the only so-called bread winner, was pretty streight forwasd when he said, "you are a Ganahl and you will be making your moeny with talking " somethng he was right, except I work also a bit with my hands as an artist as well but ideas dominate and my manual skills are limited.

the textile factory Getzner closed 5 minutes earlier ... due to Fasching / carnveval. - a period when people are sick of winter time and spring shows its first awekening. I had to return monday morning and did so.

here you can see not only the local fasching fools in their costumes but also the stunning precence of these mountainain formations that never move and define a skyline that no buidling really can obstruct.

it was a time when covid19 was taking hold on the other side of the mountain and i understaood to be in a rush. The local food was best displayed in this eat as much as you can sites.I did.

Kunsthaus Bregenz, KUB - here wiht a Porsche sports car project that refers to an older work of this local celebrity artist who Bechtold who during the time of the 70s was driving a Porsch throught Europe photograhing himself frequently with his car, the early VW Porsch he than also casted in concrete. In this case, I assume tha thte cover is supposed to miimic his own sctulputre refering to his former practice of driving and looking sexy and cool in a remote and defacto close off region behind the iron curtain. Travel throught corridors to Greece were permitted.

The KUB showed the exhibition Bunny Rodgers , Kind Kingdom. a show that also was in all likelyhood cllosed down by the virus thought attendence was low when we were there. the show offered a distopian landscape with various effect, debris and trash wrapped in various light sources being one of them. on the uppper floors simple gatings and deviders as found in pubic spaces wiht concerete mini sculptures complemented the show wihtiout trying to even mentioning to have spent much time to be informed about this installlations. at the entrance more local looking arts seemed to serve the necessities of the fact that artist s are retaiilers of smaller stuff and not everybodyi can collect impossible installatinos as they also get boring if not constantly rotated and changed. But then, don t accuse me if that art to be found at the entrnace is even by yet another artists which would not surpirsed as contemporary art has many faces and is therefore faceless and celebrity driven. the only good thing it that we live in such a plenttiful period of a nearly apeased world ( compared to larger conflicdt eras and conflicdt zones) htat celebirityi culture seems to encompass everything and nobody and even in the biggeset insitutions nobody seems to care anymore about anything. The proliferaton of msueums and art spaces in even small communities is therefore symptomatic and liberating as it really doesnt really seem to matter. I was once myself shown in this museum and hadnearly the entire msueum to my disposition . KuB

after the lunch we left for VADUZ AND CAME ACCROSS A FUNKEN, A BURNING SITE FOR "WITCHES". A FASNACHT.. FASCHING, REGIONAL CARNEVAL END OF WINTER FESTIVAL WHERE THE bad spirit of winter and women * historical precedentes existed .... are burned down at a specific date, the culminiation of that regional party... combined with fireds on mountain tops... a very communial social event that makes the eyes of children and visitors gloe and marvel. Eschen is a suburb of Vaduz, capital of Lichtenstein, but not a town but a special state and mstly used as a banking empire hidden in privacy. the equavalent of a low tax heavon for international companies who are headquartered in Llichtenstein. hence every barn a rich plattform of internatinl capitalism surrounded by prvacy and an internationalsims of understanding and mutual help. To be or not to be a Lichtenstein person is a hard in and out game. A farmer state consisting of banks and coropoarete mail box domains. Losing my overall there is painful but may be why not. The local person helpfing us with the photos is a german citizen but lviing residing in Lichtenstein. It is hard to ge Lichtenstein citizenship. 5 years of my life I was studying and half the time next to lichtenstein, a stone throw away. Parties and social life was alwasy booming in hte back yards of some barn house.. or even the basememnt .... it was swamped with drugs that came from France and the adjacent swityerland, wiht rare high school educatoin bc many locals woudl have very luctraite jobs waiting. one of my better hifht school friend was from lichtenstein and we traveled by bike and hitchhiked thoriught europe as 15 year olds.

it is hard to msis the pont that white poodles and black ink are perfect bombinations. that association can be extended to ink and paper and ink and whtie canvasses and white dresses and paper and wood made ready to be burned down. we didnt go as far but i felt tempted thought i didnt wanna be in a Lichtenstein jail. my scrolls fillled with ink are all made in the tradition of Alffed Jarries obsession with ink and paper and the German tradition of ink and paper as a form of excersicing authority over skills and needless to say to use it for disciplining. the poodel is prominent in Goethes Faust as well as Alfred Jarry was a faust admiror. the white poodle didn t get hit by the ink but it would have been amazing to see the owner jump and the dog be surprised. I nicely refrained from thse anarchistic ambitions and surpressed my provocative traits to stay normal and civilized. but i m aware of a history of bad behavior and know that in the past local communities made it sometimes a sport to burn down other villages Funken, the sturcdture sa seen in the back. Once the ink dries up the paper can be use without a danger to dirty stuff as if a kite. Kite fllyling is my prerogative in the use of these art materials. the paper is acid free.

the complicated very profittable role in the interaction between snowfilled mountians and hard ware to overcome antigravitational forces is what consitiutes the sublime in a region that knows only a relative short season bc spring, summer and fall are out times whereas winter is prime season for an international moneyed class to fill the hard to get by prime spots in hotels that are intergenerationallyi filled with family customers inspite of hte hight prices of skiing and arriving. needless to say, whne i had the priveledge to serve there as a ski instructor and best friend of my friend Joachim i was marveled. The money as a ski instructor would give me a relative economic security for my summer vacation having "fun only activities and reading being my only preoccupation" from age 17 on, resorted to international hitch hiking and was then on my own - hence my way, the hight way accross Europe with studying only. Writing these notes is a form of experiencing a nostaligic notes that didn"t forsee the miseray of our current Covid-19 pandemic.
